The designation of January 1 as the Feast of the Holy Name is new to the 1979 revision of The Book of Common Prayer.  Previous Anglican Prayer Books called this day the Feast of the Circumcision.  Eight days after Jesus was born he was, as prescribed by Jewish law, both circumcised and named.  The Church celebrates that occasion on this day.
