Almighty God, on this day you opened the way of eternal life to every race and nation by the promised gift of your Holy Spirit: Shed abroad this gift throughout the world by the preaching of the Gospel, that it may reach to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

ABOUT THE DAY OF PENTECOST . . . Pentecost (in the Anglican tradition also called “Whitsunday”) is the second most important feast on the Christian calendar (only Easter ranks higher) and marks the last of “The Great Fifty Days” that comprise the celebratory Easter Season. The Jewish faith has for millennia celebrated Shavuot, the Feast of Weeks, which in ancient Greek was called “Pentecost”— fifty days after Passover (their liberation from bondage in Egypt)—which commemorates the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai. The Christian Pentecost falls fifty days after Easter, which is our Passover (“The Paschal Feast”, when the fallen world was liberated from bondage to sin and death) and celebrates the giving of the Holy Spirit to the disciples in the upper room (Acts 2:1), empowering them for ministry (as is recounted in the rest of the Book of Acts and the history of the Church since then).
The color for this day is red, for the Holy Spirit’s appearance as tongues of flame on the head of each of the disciples. The Paschal Candle returns to its place near the Baptismal Font and will be lit hereafter only for baptisms, symbolizing the new life we share in Christ, and at funerals, as a reminder of the Resurrection.
OUR PRAYERS ARE ASKED FOR . . . . the sick and those in need, especially Ann Hopper, The Rev. PRAYING WITH THE SCRIPTURES . . . During the summer months at 7 PM, we will pray the scriptures together online using the contemplative practice Composition of Place. This method of prayer, associated most commonly within Ignatian spirituality, emphasizes the use of imagination and engaging the senses to place oneself into a scriptural passage. This practice helps deepen one’s experience of scripture and draws one closer to God in prayer. The meetings will last for about an hour.

FROM THE BISHOP . . . How to fortify ourselves against the emotional toll of today's world. Bishop Hughes addresses the emotional toll of hate and injustice in today's world, acknowledging the pain many feel while emphasizing that responding to hate with hate leads to spiritual emptiness. Instead, she recommends three simple daily practices which will fortify us for the demanding ministry needed today.
