The Baptism of Jesus
January 5, 2025

Father in heaven, who at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan proclaimed him your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit: Grant that all who are baptized into his Name may keep the covenant they have made, and boldly confess him as Lord and Savior; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

ABOUT EPIPHANY SEASON AND THE BAPTISM OF OUR LORD . . . The word epiphany means manifestation.  The Epiphany was originally observed in the Eastern Church as the feast celebrating the manifestation of Christ as God’s Son at his Baptism, the manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles (the Magi representing the brightest of the Gentile world) and the manifestation of his miraculous power by turning water into wine.  The first Sunday following the Epiphany celebrates particularly the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist in the Jordan River, and is the last feast day in the celebratory Incarnation cycle.  Subsequent Sundays will use green vestments and are commonly known as “Ordinary Time.”

FROM THE BISHOP . . .  This season, be gentle with your words. Bishop Hughes reminds us that at this moment, when so much of what we're hearing in the world is harsh and hard-hearted, the way we speak to others and the way we speak to ourselves can be an incredible gift.
